In the midst of one of the largest capital expansion programmes in the history of South Africa, Eskom has confirmed its commitment to the biggest annual power and electricity event on the continent, African Utility Week. The event unites 2000 senior power industry executives and decision makers from over 40 countries, representing the key stakeholders from the entire power utility eco-system, focusing on power infrastructure investment, renewable energy and new industry technologies.
African Utility Week takes place in Durban from 22-26 February 2010 and the City of Durban will co-host the event with Eskom. The South African state electricity provider needs billions of rands of investment to stabilise and develop power infrastructure but Eskom remains determined and positive that the funding will be arranged in due course.
African Utility Week conference director Claire Volkwyn says Eskom’s renewed hosting of the event shows the power giant’s commitment to looking at innovative ways to optimise power generation and service delivery on the continent. “Africa’s power potential has never been better positioned for growth. With increasing international interest in power development across the continent, and continuing direct foreign investment in the power sector, Africa is poised on the edge of a dramatic growth explosion”, says Claire.
The unique training, networking and discussion platforms offered by African Utility Week will demonstrate how utilities can be more efficient and offer cost-effective services through improved infrastructure maintenance, load management, delivery and revenue management choices.
Together with African Utility Week, Eskom will host the Power Indaba, an annual unique, executive two-day meeting forum for ministerial delegations, high-level power executives, policymakers and international financiers. The only event of its kind taking place in Africa, Power Indaba focuses specifically on investment in the African power industry, and is the continent’s best resource for up-to-date information on financing and new business within the sector.
