Europe’s foremost energy trading experts, including the European Commission’s Energy Cabinet, many energy trading firms such as Vattenfall Energy Trading and E.ON Energy Trading, regulators and international banks such as the Dutch ABN Amro will get together in Amsterdam this week for the annual Emart Energy 2010 conference and exhibition.  The harmonisation of the power, gas and renewable energy markets, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, is at the top of the agenda from 24-25 November, during what is Europe’s largest platform for energy traders.

Emart Energy 2010 conference producer Nel Jonk says market transparency, integrity and supervision are vital when discussing the future of energy markets:  “Without doubt much discussion will focus on the DG Energy´s determination to create a tailor-made energy sector legislation and regulators intention to supervise the energy markets,” says Nel, “but consideration will be given also to DG Markets proposals to regulate OTC derivatives markets. There will be plenty of food for thought since by November new legislatory proposals and consultations have been posted.”

Harmonisation of the energy markets
The chairman of the European Federation of Energy Traders, Paul van Son, says market participants are eager to understand how “target models” may work out, that have been discussed and determined in the Florence and Madrid Forums offering a pan-European wholesale market design for introduction by 2015.  During Emart Energy, our focus will, thus, be on the question how harmonisation of the power, gas and renewable energy markets can and will be realised in the coming years”.

Pre-Cancun discussion
The 16th UN Conference on Climate Change is scheduled to take place in Cancun, Mexico, just one week after EMART Energy 2010. Developments after Copenhagen will be discussed in Amsterdam and expert panels will look at what is to be expected of the Cancun Conference and what the key issues, bottlenecks and the consequences for the market mechanisms are.
