Africa's biggest wind farm opens in Morocco
29 June 2010 - Morocco’s King Mohammed VI inaugurated R2,2 billion wind farm near Tangiers, which an official source said was the biggest in Africa.

The new wind farm, which cost some 300 million dollars, is located in Melloussa, 34 kilometres (21 miles) from Tangiers in northern Morocco and has 165 turbines, with a production capacity of 140 megawatts.


Nigeria pledges better regulation for power investors
29 June 2010 - The man charged with turning around Nigeria’s dilapidated power sector on Monday promised faster reforms to encourage foreign investors to take part in a planned privatisation programme.

Barth Nnaji, who was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan a week ago to lead a task force on boosting power supply in Africa’s most populous nation, said government alone could not invest enough to meet its energy needs.


Renewable, clean energy critical for West African intergration
28 June 2010 - Clean and efficient energy plays a critical role in development in West African states, Mr Janik VAA, Head of Infrastructure and Sustainable Development of European Union (EU) Delegation in Ghana, has said.

Making the observation in Accra on Friday, he stressed that provision of a clean and efficient energy was critical for both national and regional integration of countries in the sub-region adding energy and economic development was inseparably linked.  Basically, energy produced usually from renewable resources without creating environmental debt.


Chinese solar power firm scores as World Cup sponsor
25 June 2010 - China did not qualify for the World Cup, but the country is still making an appearance in South Africa. An ambitious Chinese solar company, the country's first World Cup sponsor, has placed advertising in all the stadiums in a bid to give its brand a worldwide boost.

Yingli Green Energy Co.'s sponsorship deal allows it to show its logo of Yingli Solar, in Chinese and English, on electronic perimeter-boards at all 64 games of the World Cup. The Yingli slogan appears for 30 seconds at a time, totaling 8 minutes in each game. Yingli also has right to showcase its solar products near the stadiums.


Eskom's World Bank loan is subject to conditions
25 June 2010 - Eskom’s World Bank loan is subject to conditions on combating corruption and mitigating the impact of greenhouse gas pollution, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan says.

Gordhan revealed in reply to a parliamentary question that the World Bank agreed to apply retroactive financing for components of Eskom’s new Medupi power plant that were procured prior to the approval of the US3.75 billion loan (R28.6bn) in April.


Brazil and Mozambique sign energy accord
24 June 2010 - The ministers of energy of Brazil and Mozambique have signed a memorandum of understanding on bilateral cooperation in the preparation and execution of studies, projects and programs in the field of energy.


Kenya adds 35MW geothermal generation
 
24 June 2010 - KenGen has started producing power this week at a 35MW geothermal power plant.  The company plans to add a further 350MW of geothermal capacity by 2013 according to Managing Director Eddy Njoroge.

“Our increased investment in geothermal power production is also in line with KenGen’s business strategy of reducing reliance on hydro power which is dependent on weather patterns, and to pursue green energy sources which are safe to the environment,” Njoroge said.


Searching for solutions to global warming in Africa
23 June 2010 - What would the wealthy nations of the West (and their rising rivals in the East) do if they actually wanted to prevent catastrophic warming? Here in Africa, the obvious answer is that they would find the ways and means to discourage deforestation-the ruinous practice of clear-cutting for timber, charcoal and arable land that accounts for at least 20 percent of the atmospheric carbon burden. Save the trees, and you might just save the planet.
