Crisis forces Eskom to review tariff hike plan

]21 November 2008 - South Africa's state-owned utility Eskom will review its plan to raise tariffs on power in light of the global financial turmoil, the company's spokesperson said on Thursday. Eskom, which provides 95% of South Africa's power, said it would raise tariffs as part of its efforts to raise money for its R343-billion new power investment programme. "The recent international financial and economic developments have necessitated that we review our assumptions that underpin the tariff application," spokesman Fani Zulu said in an emailed statement. He did not elaborate on what the review would entail.


New framework for SA’s electricity pricing framework

]21 November 2008 – South Africa’s cabinet has approved the electricity pricing policy, government spokesman Themba Maseko announced on Thursday. Briefing the media following Cabinet’s regular Wednesday meeting, he said the policy objectives included setting a clear framework for determining electricity prices and ensuring cost-reflective tariffs while protecting the poor.


US$30 million equity for African Energy Infrastructure Programme
20 November 2008 - A proposal for US$30 million for the African energy infrastructure programme (IFSA) has been approved by the Board of Directors of the African Development Bank.

ElectricityThe fund offers an opportunity for continued efforts to bolster energy infrastructure, while encouraging private sector participation. Based in Mauritius, the fun will invest in energy and energy infrastructure, predominantly within sub-Saharan Africa. It is the first dedicated electricity and energy fund in Africa.


280MWs for Sasol
20 November 2008 - A 280MW gas power plant has been installed at Sasol’s coal to fuels facility at Secunda, South Africa by General Electric Co (GE). The first installation of its kind, the plant will provide power for Sasol’s synthetic fuel production, and any excess electricity will be sold to Eskom. The plant will initially run on natural gas, but can also use low BTU gas/flare gas.
