Logistics investment pay off for Aberdare Cables customers 21 April 2008 - The multi-million investment by power cable manufacturer Aberdare Cables in a new, high technology 12 500m2 warehouse and distribution centre at the Greenhills Industrial Estate near Elandsfontein is paying off for customers who are benefiting from the logistics efficiencies.
Just over a year after its official opening, the Greenhills hub was already managing the storage and distribution of more than 9 000 Aberdare line items and since the end of March this year handles all of the 160 000 tons of electrical cable and associated products turned out by Aberdare’s factories each year. Order turnaround times for customers have already been reduced.
High-tech tinning line comes on board at Aberdare CablesA state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly tinning line has been installed and commissioned at a cost of more than R6-million to apply tin coatings to copper conductor manufactured at the Long Street, Johannesburg, factory of Powertech company Aberdare Cables.
The tinning line, designed and manufactured in Germany, uses special chemicals to electrolytically deposit up to five microns of tin onto copper conductor at a speed of 15m/sec, ensuring the tinned copper conductor meets SABS and IEC international electrical specifications.
Low voltage power cable for minesABERDARE INTRODUCES NEW LOW VOLTAGE POWER CABLE FOR MINES
The change from pneumatic drilling to electrically powered Hilti rock face drills in many South African mines, has created a demand for a safe electric cable that will in addition stand up to the rigorous underground conditions experienced in hard rock mines.
Aberdare Cables has introduced SafeEarth Copyright R cable, a low voltage 16mm2 five-core mining cable comprising three phases, a neutral and a reduced 10mm2 earth conductor for use in underground applications where, for safety reasons, earth integrity is critical. SafeEarth is PVC insulated and bedded, SWA armoured and PVC sheathed, and manufactured to the SANS 1507-3 standard.
Local high-spec runway lighting cable production well timed for airports growthAirport expansion, upgrading, the new Nelspruit Kruger Mpumalanga airport and the proposed construction of the major King Shaka Airport at La Mercy near Durban have created demand for a highly specialised electrical cable to supply power for critical runway lighting systems.
Aberdare Cables, a major local manufacturer of power cable products and systems, has developed a specialist cable to meet the strict requirements of civil and commercial aviation authorities for runway lighting.
Aberdare CablesAberdare Cables, a member of the Powertech Group, is a leading African manufacturer of cables with five manufacturing sites, in three provinces of South Africa, and offshore operations in Mozambique, Portugal and Spain.

SLIPDAC WIRING FROM ABERDARE CABLES MAKES LIFE EASIER FOR CONTRACTORS A range of low-friction single core general purpose house wiring that offers contractors a significant ease-of-use advantage, has been designed and introduced to the general electrical contracting market by Aberdare Cables.
The Slipdac Housewire cable concept was developed with electrical contractors’ needs in mind. Firstly, it is neatly and accurately coiled on automatic coilers that greatly reduce the risk of entanglement; secondly, up to four colour-coded cables can be placed in a standard Slipdac bucket for quick, tangle-free dispensing and secure storage after use; and thirdly it is 20-30 percent easier to pull through standard 20mm SABS conduit.
