India-Brazil-SA summit commits to energy cooperation

19 November 2007 - The second India-Brazil-SA (IBSA) summit ended on Wednesday with an announcement that the three countries will work together in the promotion of nuclear energy, clean energy technologies and other renewable energies and the endorsement of climate change mitigation.

In a declaration issued by Presidents Mbeki of South Africa, Singh of India and Lula da Silva of Brazil, it was agreed the IBSA nations would pool resources to ensure a secure supply of safe, sustainable and non-polluting energy to meet global demand, particularly in developing countries.

Cooperation between the countries would include clean coal technologies and renewable energies such as biomass and innovative ways to transfer, develop and commercialise clean energy.

The IBSA countries appealed to the developing countries to take a more “ambitious” and “quantifiable” role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions post 2010.
